Whether your car is stock and in need of alignment or your car has been slammed to the floor and you need to ensure it is aligned properly to minimize tire wear, Solo Motorsports can get you squared up!

At Solo@Norcross we offer one of the most accurate alignments around, But not everyone knows that we offer 4-wheel Alignment on our flush-with-the-floor Hunter Alignment rack for $130 for standard suspensions and $150 for the lowered life slammed cars! That’s as cheap as the local Firestone or whatever, except we won’t scratch your wheels, give you a hard time for being lowered, rip half of your bumper off, or upcharge you for being slammed, and beyond that, our machinery is top-of-the-line and superior to virtually every other shop in Georgia.

Proper aligned wheels and tires track straight and true, meaning the car gets greater mileage, performance and handles better. Those tires of yours will last longer – and considering the cost of your average 19in performance tire, skipping the alignment will affect your bank account in a negative way.

Beyond that, poor alignment gets the worst out of your car. Crazy spooky things can go on – like it can pull to one side or the other under braking (also a symptom of a problem with one side of the brakes which we can also help you with), so it’s really in your best interests and your car’s to have it aligned at least every 10,000 miles – or as little as 5,000 if you live somewhere with deplorable roads (Helloooooo ATL, we still love you though).

Over the years, we’ve lowered a TON of cars. Let’s be honest it looks badass and handles better, but after installing pneumatic suspension or lowering springs which requires dismantling the suspension – most cars will need an alignment.

We get this ALOT, also.. hell yes we do. Most lowered cars don’t have efficient ground clearance & most shops have alignment racks mounted above ground – that means most alignment shops can’t even get a lowered car up onto their above-ground alignment racks – even with ramps and planks and all the other tricks to help a lowered car get up a steep driveway or something. BUT WE CAN.

We’re all auto enthusiasts at Solo Motorsports and most of us drive modified, lowered cars so this was a problem we wanted to fix, for our customers, and ourselves. When we were deciding what kind of alignment equipment we wanted to purchase were looking to spec out an alignment rig for our Shop@Norcross that could be mounted as flush with the floor as possible.

The average alignment shop has the machine mounted above ground, requiring you to drive your car UP A RAMP onto the lift, and that’s what we wanted to avoid at all costs, plus, we wanted an alignment machine that could be capable of motorsports-type alignment settings, and not rip off your bumper as payment.

Our search for the right tool led us to our obvious choice.. Hunter Engineering.  Solo Motorsports is proud to be a technology partner to Hunter Engineering and is one of the few exclusive facilities in North America to offer their in ground alignment. One of the most advanced aligning systems out there, our Hunter aligner is so precise and advanced, it is used as a measuring device for precision collision repair to pinpoint problem areas and even has the ability to compensate for lowered vehicles and vehicles with suspension geometry out of factory specifications – a feature which is extremely useful for a performance shop like us that almost exclusively deals with cars that have their suspension modified in one way or another.

For those customers in need of a more “track-oriented” alignment, Solo Motorsports offers specialized techniques and expertise including setting rake, adjusting ride height, corner balancing and more.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Gather around, it’s story time. After lifting the car specialized clamps are mounted onto each wheel – specifically the TIRE- not the wheel. This is referred to as a “touchless” system and is the preferred method, ascuh

The clamps grab the outside of the tire and center using the inside of the barrel but DO NOT TOUCH YOUR WHEELS AT ANY TIME. This is mucho important, especially since we offer some high end wheels and wheels can scratch easily. Note the plates the front wheels sit on to allow the wheels to turn. After installing the clamps, a specialized sensor is attached to the clamp at each wheel, measures where it is pointed exactly and sends that information back to a computer terminal, which then tells the tech what wheel is off by how much and what has to be done to correct the issue and bring the car back to the desired spec.

Our promise to the RS3’s owner to offer their car real spitfire was delivered. CTS & our SMS Tune worked hand in hand perfectly to give this RS3 one hell of a kick.

Alongside a new tune, the client decided he wanted his ride planted firmly to the ground – so a set of H&R Sports Springs was also thrown into the mix.

For the perfect stance, H&R Sport Springs was our go-to choice naturally. It lowered the RS 3 approximately 1.0” in the front and .80” in the rear. Remember kids, lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity improves handling and creates a sleek European stance – Wunderbar!

Overall, this RS3 was one hell of a fun build, when the client picked up their RS3 a grin ear to ear appeared, that told us our job was completed. That is why we put pure raw passion into everything we do; because it creates happiness. Chassis Mounted Wing on a Lamborghini Huracan

Yesterday we reviewed a devastatingly gorgeous white Huracan with a VF Supercharger, well like the saying goes.. good things come in pairs! He brought a buddy along with ANOTHER Huracan to throw down some numbers on the Dyno!

Fast, loud and vicariously impulsive this matte black Huracan boasts a custom straight pipe with electronic cut-outs & a delicious carbon fiber chassis mounted wing from Sadistic Iron Werks. If there was a cure for this condition, I don’t think the owner would want it.

Our client came into our Norcross facility with one very specific demand; They wanted torque all the time, and boy, he got it. We ordered a Supercharger from VF Engineering to fill this tall order.

The VF800 system is a genuine bolt-on supercharger kit containing everything necessary to produce size-able gains to both the HP and torque of the Huracan’s V10 engine. Available for 2014+ models worldwide, this system uses the latest generation Eaton TVS2300 3-lobe “Twin Vortices Series” roots supercharger with an air/water after cooling system. Using state of the art technology and production techniques, VF-Engineering has created a system that effectively integrates with the High Output 5.2-liter powerplant to produce proven OEM quality results.

Packing a lag-free instant punch of torque from 2300 rpm, the air charge progressively climbs to redline for an exhilarating increase in forward thrust. Solo Motorsports @Norcross had a delightful surprise show up out of the blue (get it?) A brand new 2019 Vantage V8 in Flugplatz Blue! We are proud to say we are one of the first shops here in America that can tune these beauties properly!

 

Let’s take a look under the bonnet, shall we?

 

Wait, that’s no Aston Engine.

Your eyes are right, that is the same engine that powers the Mercedes-AMG GT. Daddy Benz was one generous sugar daddy to Aston Martin by the looks of things. Secretively partnered in 2013 Daimler has been supplying electronics, infotainment and engines for a minimal return of benefit in Aston Martin’s ever-growing stakes (just like a classic sugar daddy, they want to see some returns from their investment) Benz gave Aston a mid-engine heart of 503-horsepower, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and ontop of it the title of one of the best handling Aston Martins ever created. Not a bad trade, if you ask me.

This unsuspected Lovechild born from this scandalous affair is brilliant in our opinion. Why such the partnership? Possibly Aston Martin & Mercedes-Benz teamed up to have a challenger ready for Chevy’s mid-engine C8 ‘Zora”. Maybe Mercedes-Benz wanted to shake their “doesn’t play well with others” attitude, who truly knows all that matters is WE GOT A GORGEOUS VANTAGE OUT OF IT and got to Dyno it!

When you have a performance car, a daily driver or a weekend midnight race sleeper, your stock brake system might just don’t always cut it. If you’re driving aggressively (and, let’s be honest, why wouldn’t you be, we know you’re flying down 85 goin 110, we aint snitchin’), you need something that will handle the serious power and speed your car (and foot) produces. Performance brake upgrades like a new set of pads – or even a big brake kit – will fit that bill.

Think. Step on the brakes. Is the ABS system kicking on because the wheels are locking up? Congratulations, your car simply can’t stop any faster.

Big brakes and drilled rotors WILL help with heat dissipation, and you don’t just need to worry about that on the race track, this applies to daily driving habits swell. And if you’re actually tracking your car enough to warrant different brakes, then you know enough to ignore this advice.

We’ve heard all sorts of reasons the dealership suggests not to “upgrade” brakes, especially on performance cars. “They are tested and balanced for the car, by actual engineers and upgrading WON’T HELP ”

That price is absolutely asinine and ridiculous. Mercedes must be out of their mind demanding a price for just replacing the stock front brakes.

We had to seek a quick and reasonable solution to this dilemma. This dude needed new front brakes FAST.Insisted on OEM parts ONLY. The Team sat there spitballing ideas back & fourth.

Then there was an epiphany. Light went off and BOOM. Why not a Big Brake Kit? There was a new Big Brake Kit in the back- consisting out of genuine OEM 2 piece 390mm Rotors that could fit this Merc . Eureka! Genius. Good Job.

To make these rotors fit the boys at Solo had to custom make some nifty new brackets. Forged from high strength Billet 6061 aluminum, featured below.

Most cars from factory are designed to be Front Skid Limited, that is, the front brakes will lock up before the rears. The reason being if you lock the front brakes, the car will continue to go in whatever direction the wheel is pointing(dun). This allows for much safer driving compared to the alternative, which is called Rear Skid Limited.

When a car is Rear Skid Limited, it means the rears will lock up before the fronts. When this happens, the car will try to spin out. Since during braking the weight transfers to the front of the car, there is less weight in the rear which causes it to try to rotate around. In some cases, you can spin around completely, which is why your front brakes have more braking force than the rear.

For the TL:DR crowd: More braking surface also gives more control, more rotational mass (Newton’s second law) means safer breaking distances.

Respect Your Elders: Solo Motorsports decided to stop by the BMW CCA Museum for the final weekend of their ICONs exhibit to pay respect towards one of the most iconic modern Bavarian turbo saloons ever created.

Entering the museum there’s a sign that reads “In 1976, God Stopped Making 2002s.” This sets quite the statement of the attitude 2002 owners and enthusiasts possess, and to admit I concur. For I play nepotism with this particular chassis owning a 1970 Malaga Red 2002 myself.

The hall leading to the Museum greeted us with a cheerful array of vintage die cast cars from decades past, colorful whimsy home made toys, newspaper clippings featuring triuampant reviews of the BMW 2002, Racing Flyers & all sorts of awards, trophies and everything else that paid homage to the beloved 2002.

The BMW 2002 Series emerged from the 85-hp 1.6-liter 1600 (more properly known as the 1600-2) in 1966. In 1968 BMW installed a 100-hp 2.0-liter version of the same engine, birthing the 2002.

However secular, the 2002 is laid out as God intended: front engine, rear-wheel drive, fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and BMW’s vener-able semi-trailing arms in rear, coil springs and antiroll bars. What else could you ask for in the 1970s? The engine is a dohc inline four-cylinder, with mechanical valves and a timing chain. Compression ratio and induction vary by model and year.

Single Solex downdraft carburetion was standard 2002 induction, while twin Solex side-drafts fed the 2002ti. Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection increased driveability and performance in the 130-hp 2002tii, and was also used in the 170-hp 2002 Turbo. The ti and tii shared the standard 2002 body. Only the 2002 and 2002tii were officially exported to the States. All spun a Getrag 232 four-speed manual gearbox, with a ZF 3 HP automatic optional on standard 2002s. A rare and highly coveted Getrag 235 five-speed close-ratio gearbox was optional as well.

The 2002’s perfect combination of spritely cornering, magnetic braking and confident handling simply eluded its contemporary European competitors—however cool. And the 2002 ran rings around domestic cars. A 1960s-70s-era Detroit sedan—epitome of the land yacht—would flounder about the countryside struggling to maintain composure at 35 mph. A 2002 would scream by at twice that speed with zero drama, getting 30 mpg in the process. Horsepower notwithstanding, in the twisties a mercedes driver would see only the round taillights of that curious little box that just blew his doors off.

Body styles alongside the 2 door coupe included the touring (hatchback), a targa-like Baur cabriolet, the rare (200 units) 1971 2002 full convertible and the ultimate example of the genre—the 1974 2002 Turbo (1672 units). This will prob be the first and last time I got to witness all 3 beauties in the same room.

Honourable Mention…

Alongside this spectacular collection of E10/2002’s one car stood out; a Diamond Schwartz E30 M3. Upon closer inspection there was a good reason why this E30 had rights to be there.

Upon her windshield was a commentary from BMW CCA. It informed us her name is ‘VilMMMA’. She was donated to the Museum by a man named Mark Woolley.

The note read: ‘Mark has graciously donated his beloved VilMMMA to the BMW CCA Foundation so that others may continue to enjoy the car as much as he did. We’re honored to have VilMMMA here as an ongoing celebration of his life.’

One does not simply walk into Solo and think they’re gonna walk out without a custom SMS tune for their newly purchased RS3.

First Impression

Parked in-front of me is a Nardo Grey RS3 a customer just dropped off. I gaze upon it somewhat more confused than usual and mumble to myself “What’s so great about it? It looks like an S3 to me.” 

Boris, one of Solo’s top dogs was in earshot of my comment and comes charging over and without a word pops open the hood, looks at me and says in his signature voice “Issa RS3, ya-know?”

I hesitated and naïvely examine the engine bay, looking quickly once over, and nonchalantly voice “it looks like the S3’s engine bay” (mind you I couldn’t envision what the S3’s engine bay looked like honeslty) With no hesitation Boris corrected me and explained this 5cly 2500cc engine is a far cry from the S3’s 4cly 2000cc engine. He goes on to explain this one has wayyyyyy more potency than the S3, with the addition of one more cylinder and an additional 108 horsepower.

He chuckles, and then announces “I’m going tune the F*** out of it.”

With the executive order and promise to the RS3’s owner to give their car real spitfire we set off on a journey to develop this RS3 into one real hot saloon. In the next few days we will highlight coverage of the exciting development over here at Solo Motorsports @Norcross.

For what the client wants out of their RS3 stock parts just won’t cut it. Blow are our first modifications to get the most out of this fiesty 2.5 litre 5cyl engine. Let’s take a look into what we have chosen so far –

Intercooler Core

This giant intercooler core that CTS offers is 42% larger than stock and meets extensive quality control and pressure testing (up to 50psi). Cast aluminum end tanks attach to factory hoses seamlessly to ensure a boost-leak free fit that results in increased horsepower and torque.

Stock FMIC size: 6.3 tall x 25.3 wide x 3.2 thick = 510.05 in3

CTS FMIC size: 10.4 tall x 24 wide x 3.5 thick = 873.60 in3 

OEM air scoop

The OEM air scoop works in conjunction with their airbox to seamlesly force cold air into the air intake system.  Air then flows through their high flow cone air filter, which utilizes an inverted cone design and 3.5″ Velocity stack for maximum engine breathing.  Our single piece CNC mandrel bent aluminum intake pipe allows for smooth entry of cold air into the the engine providing peak power gains ranging from 6-11HP.  All of the components included in the CTS air intake system work flawlessly together to provide increased horsepower and torque throughout the entire power band and an aggressive race-inspired sound.a

This stainless steel high-flow downpipe that allows the user to remove the restrictive factory “main catalytic converters”. This downpipe is a part of our modular exhaust system and it is compatible with factory or CTS Turbo mid-pipes.

CTS used CAD simulation to streamline the flow of exhaust gasses and ensure that it splits evenly into two outlets. Many hours of R&D were spent to ensure perfect fit, smooth exhaust flow and excellent sound.

Here at SoloMotorsports, we’re no strangers to modding Porsches, but we had the pleasure to work on this 95B Macan S, Porsche’s delicious blend of classic 911 DNA with the size of the Cayenne, resulting in a crossover that looks like nothing else yet distinctly screams IM A FRIGGIN PORSCHE!

As Dr Porsche once said, you should always be able to look at the car and tell it’s a Porsche. However, the factory ride height is so annoyingly high with the models that don’t boast pneumatic suspensions, it’s as if they thought the prospective buyers all planned on going Baja racing, giving the Macan S a silly amount of wheelgap. That’s why it’s here to see the Solo Experts to eliminate the unnessecary gappage in the wheel well you can easily do push-ups in!

These H&R Sport springs dropped our Macan S by a healthy 1.5in both front and rear to make a significant change in its appearance and sharpen its handling, too. What’s more, these won’t lower the Macan so much as to “slam” it or render it impractical. Demonstrated in the gallery below is the ‘before, during and after” process.

We didn’t even need to take the car outside before the difference was noticeable – the change was clear right off the lift. The drop in ride height really makes the Macan look as it was intended to, a sporty, fun option for when you can’t take a 911 and a Cayenne is just too darn big.

The simple addition of a set of lowering springs has made a huge difference in the aesthetic of this Macan S, giving it the sportier character you’d expect of a Porsche S model visually as well as its handling capability while taking nothing away from its usability.

If you’re still driving around at factory ride height, consider lowering your suspension – a lower slung look enhances your aesthetics and lowers your center of gravity, making any set of wheels look better and even otherwise stock vehicles look sharper.

Up first is a long time client with their 2014 BMW 550i in Rhondite Silver. This F10 boasts BMW’s N63tu 4.0 V8.

Our client previously had our signature SMS tune to accompany their 3.5in VRSF downpipes, seems it only took a little taste of power to bring them back asking for more! For the revamp the team installed a one of a kind custom turbo back exhaust, new electric cut-outs and a all-new intake alongside a relogged SMS tune, pictured below

What about something that’s little bit more practical, subtle & a true sleeper? This gorgeous 2011 Deep Sea Blue 550i came in for routine service to clean out filters and ended up with a lot more fun going under the bonnet. It is a no brainer to say that they are absolutely pleased with the overall mods and results of the SMS Tune. Our customer chose the same direct bolt on 3.5″ downpipes that the Rhondite Silver 550i boasted. The improved 3.5″ downpipes offer less restrictive air flow reducing back pressure significantly which results in faster spool, an increase in power & a more aggressive exhaust note, making this a pleasure of a daily driver and an excellent choice for an upgrade.

Doesn’t it just roll off your tongue ever so beautifully? Just like Alfa Romeo rolled out the Gulia Quadrifoglio as their triumphant return to the States this is absolute proof that the legendary performance brand can deliver the goods, looks & performance and could steal the title of class favourite. 

I’m looking at you BMW, Audi, and Mercedes.

Sure, some of the Giulia’s classmates are better all-around, but there’s an extra level of oomph that Alfa doubtlessly delivers. Within the depths of the Alfa lives a heart made of Ferrari. Yes, you heard me right. The Quadrifoglio was implanted with a rhapsodic 505hp 2.9liter V6 twin turbo and an exquisitely calibrated eight-speed automatic (Alfa pulled a fast one on us and again left out the 6-speed manual to European models only)

This beautiful Black on Black Quadrifoglio showed up at our Norcross HQ for just a subtle hint of modification a set of H&R sport springs.

Alongside the esthetic enhancements the H&R Sport Springs offers the Alfa’s center of gravity it also reduced body roll for better handling. The progressive spring rate design provides superb ride quality and comfort. A lower wind resistance signature made the Romeo more streamlined and improve gas mileage. If you are only looking to improve one part of your vehicle’s suspension, you cannot go wrong with installing Sport Springs. Porsche 911/991.1 GT3 RS 

The standard the most sports car manufacturers take notes are Porsche 911s. This model is the most uncivil of all 911s. Lightweight version of the track-ready Porsche GT3 allows you to further bond with the road. We installed Dundon Motorsports Headers and Exhaust and later strapped the car to the Dyno to measure Exhaust system power output gains. The car gained additional 8wtq at 310wtq and gained 16whp at 429whp.

Fine-Tune, Dust-Off and a Wash, 

1963 Volkswagen Beetle

Very-Regular customer swang by and checked in this immaculate Volkswagen bug for a checkup “a Fine-Tune” if you will. Psst, we think the bug checked in just to Show-Off!

The bug was inspected thoroughly, however, we have found no faults besides a fine, an even, misty layer of dust accumulation throughout the car. Quickly we resolved the issues by pulling out the hose and giving the bug a wash. The direkting direktor was very pleased and proceeded to capture still frames..

The truth behind the dust is that as much as its immaculate looking, its not as much immaculate to drive, they’re not a daily’! The air-cooled v-dubs are in one way or another associated with many of us. Not as many are still closely associated with the air-cooled cars.

The ones that are still associated deserve and receive full respect, it’s not that much of a challenge since many of us were associated with the air-cooled cars one way or another.
