Which Upgrade Deserves Your Cash First?

You’ve finally done it. You bought the project car, or maybe you’ve just paid off your daily driver and you’re ready to start tinkering. You have a burning desire to modify your vehicle and a hole in your pocket where your savings used to be. Now you face the enthusiast’s oldest dilemma: Do you make it fast, or do you make it handle? It is the classic battle of Suspension vs. Power first. While the temptation to chase high horsepower numbers is strong, the “right” answer might not be the one you want to hear. Let’s break down the pros, the cons, and the strategy to build a car that is actually fun to drive.

 

The Allure of Power: The “Dyno Queen” Route

Let’s be honest; power is intoxicating. There is nothing quite like the feeling of being pinned to your seat, the sound of a turbo spooling, or the roar of an uncorked exhaust.

Why we want it first:

  • Bragging Rights: It’s much cooler to say “I’m pushing 800 wheel horsepower” than “I have adjustable dampening.”
  • Instant Gratification: You feel power immediately in a straight line. Traffic light to traffic light, power rules.
  • The Sound: Intake and exhaust mods (often the first step in power adders) make the car sound aggressive.

PES TUNING R8

This R8 came to us with an old tune that didn’t work quite well with their PES Tuning G4 MP112 Supercharger.

PES Tuning has this V8 R8 screaming!

The supercharger kit that’s strapped to this R8 uses an Eaton M90 supercharger, a specialty-made intake manifold, and retuned ECU.  So while we may be drooling over the upgraded R8, the price tag may have you  There are cheaper supercharger upgrades available as well, but seriously…who’s interested in that?

This particular supercharger system consists for an Air/Liquid intercooler, independently working at 9 PSI. This highly efficient system provides an engine performance boost of up to 45% compared with the original.

Eventuri Carbon Fiber Intake System w/ Metal Turbo Tube 🔥🔥

Flow Bench Data: Stock Intake 530 CFM : Eventuri Intake 840 CFM

Fitment: RS3 8V Gen 2 and TTRS 8S including the 2019 OPF DWNA versions.

With the 8V RS3 Gen 2 and TTRS 8S platforms being widely used for high power builds, we have developed a groundbreaking intake system to support even those exceeding the 1000whp mark. This stage 3 intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. The intake tube has an internal diameter of 103mm or just over 4″ and has a smooth curvature from the filter housing all the way to the turbo inlet. The filter itself has been specifically designed for this intake and has a huge outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3″ with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the RS3 engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. We have lifted the front of the duct to now provide an extra opening behind the hood which is equivalent to an extra 7″ diameter hole for the intake to draw from. The resulting system has the capability of flowing 840 CFM at 28″ H2O while keeping intake temperatures at a minimum with the sealed design.

The Eventuri Difference

The 8V RS3/TTRS Eventuri system uses our Patented Carbon fibre Housings which provide an aerodynamically efficient airflow path from the filter to the turbo tubing. Not just another cone filter with a heat shield but a unique design which invokes the Venturi affect.

Our promise to the RS3’s owner to offer their car real spitfire was delivered. CTS & our SMS Tune worked hand in hand perfectly to give this RS3 one hell of a kick.

Alongside a new tune, the client decided he wanted his ride planted firmly to the ground – so a set of H&R Sports Springs was also thrown into the mix.

For the perfect stance, H&R Sport Springs was our go-to choice naturally. It lowered the RS 3 approximately 1.0” in the front and .80” in the rear. Remember kids, lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity improves handling and creates a sleek European stance – Wunderbar!

Overall, this RS3 was one hell of a fun build, when the client picked up their RS3 a grin ear to ear appeared, that told us our job was completed. That is why we put pure raw passion into everything we do; because it creates happiness. The owner of this RS3 was extremely pleased with our proven results. The CTS & our SMS Tune worked hand in hand perfectly to give this RS3 serious power gains under the hood.

The customer wanted gripping suspension while maintaining a smooth ride so the  H&R Sport Springs was our go-to choice naturally. These new springs lowered the RS 3 approximately 1.0” in the front and .80” in the rear. Lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity improves handling and creates a unique look while still remaining true to it’s European elegance.

One does not simply walk into Solo and think they’re gonna walk out without a custom SMS tune for their newly purchased RS3.

First Impression

Parked in-front of me is a Nardo Grey RS3 a customer just dropped off. I gaze upon it somewhat more confused than usual and mumble to myself “What’s so great about it? It looks like an S3 to me.” 

Boris, one of Solo’s top dogs was in earshot of my comment and comes charging over and without a word pops open the hood, looks at me and says in his signature voice “Issa RS3, ya-know?”

I hesitated and naïvely examine the engine bay, looking quickly once over, and nonchalantly voice “it looks like the S3’s engine bay” (mind you I couldn’t envision what the S3’s engine bay looked like honeslty) With no hesitation Boris corrected me and explained this 5cly 2500cc engine is a far cry from the S3’s 4cly 2000cc engine. He goes on to explain this one has wayyyyyy more potency than the S3, with the addition of one more cylinder and an additional 108 horsepower.

He chuckles, and then announces “I’m going tune the F*** out of it.”

With the executive order and promise to the RS3’s owner to give their car real spitfire we set off on a journey to develop this RS3 into one real hot saloon. In the next few days we will highlight coverage of the exciting development over here at Solo Motorsports @Norcross.

Audi RS3 Tuning
Red like Loboutin. The CTS intake nicely drenched this RS3’s bay in monochromatic red dominance.

For what the client wants out of their RS3 stock parts just won’t cut it. Blow are our first modifications to get the most out of this fiesty 2.5 litre 5cyl engine. Let’s take a look into what we have chosen so far –

Intercooler Core

This giant intercooler core that CTS offers is 42% larger than stock and meets extensive quality control and pressure testing (up to 50psi). Cast aluminum end tanks attach to factory hoses seamlessly to ensure a boost-leak free fit that results in increased horsepower and torque.

Stock FMIC size: 6.3 tall x 25.3 wide x 3.2 thick = 510.05 in3

CTS FMIC size: 10.4 tall x 24 wide x 3.5 thick = 873.60 in3 

OEM air scoop

The OEM air scoop works in conjunction with their airbox to seamlesly force cold air into the air intake system.  Air then flows through their high flow cone air filter, which utilizes an inverted cone design and 3.5″ Velocity stack for maximum engine breathing.  Our single piece CNC mandrel bent aluminum intake pipe allows for smooth entry of cold air into the the engine providing peak power gains ranging from 6-11HP.  All of the components included in the CTS air intake system work flawlessly together to provide increased horsepower and torque throughout the entire power band and an aggressive race-inspired sound.a


stainless steel high-flow downpipe

This stainless steel high-flow downpipe that allows the user to remove the restrictive factory “main catalytic converters”. This downpipe is a part of our modular exhaust system and it is compatible with factory or CTS Turbo mid-pipes.

CTS used CAD simulation to streamline the flow of exhaust gasses and ensure that it splits evenly into two outlets. Many hours of R&D were spent to ensure perfect fit, smooth exhaust flow and excellent sound.

This time, this awesome Track ready Audi TT VR6 checked in for track suspension upgrades. The previous setup was little just too soft. We installed MCS 2-Way Adjustable Race-Coilovers, Ground Control Camber Plates, Corner Balancing and finally fingled Race Alignment.

Stripped down of any extra weight and enhanced with race components on an AWD system will be a serious contender in any weather condition. We’ve installed bigger brakes and race pads, top Garage 4-point harness bar and 6-point Schroth racing harness, Sparco seats, Coilovers, Stainless Steel Brake lines, wheels and tires, Race alignment, custom tune, hotchkins and 034 suspension components and other bits.. This thing is nimble and sounds amazing!

This time, this awesome Track ready Audi TT VR6 checked in for track suspension upgrades. The previous setup was little just too soft. We installed MCS 2-Way Adjustable Race-Coilovers, Ground Control Camber Plates, Corner Balancing and finally fingled Race Alignment.

This little Track-Ready Audi TT built in our shop will be putting up hot laps in the upcoming events near you! Stripped down of any extra weight and enhanced with race components on an AWD system will be a serious contender in any weather condition. We’ve installed bigger brakes and race pads, top Garage 4-point harness bar and 6-point Schroth racing harness, Sparco seats, Coilovers, Stainless Steel Brake lines, wheels and tires, Race alignment, custom tune, hotchkins and 034 suspension components and other bits.. This thing is nimble and sounds amazing!
