When you buy a sports car, the urge to start changing things hits you fast.

And I mean really fast. It’s the kind of feeling where you think, “Who needs a warranty? Let’s rip out the seats and drop in carbon-fiber buckets right now!” People have been doing this for years. If you talk to your dads American muscle-car buddy, he’ll probably tell you about the time he and his buddies rented a 1967 GT500 Mustang and swapped the engine with one from his own car in a single weekend… Wild right?

Today, car companies sell sports cars that already come packed with upgrades. But even then, new owners still can’t resist smashing their piggy banks to add more mods the second they get the keys.

Take this brand new BMW M2 for example; painted in a soft baby-blue color that looks calm and sweet… just don’t let that fool you. Under the hood is a 3-liter twin-turbo inline-6 engine with 480 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. It’s a two-door coupe that’s half luxury, half monster. With a price tag of about $68,000.

Compare that to the Mercedes SL550, which weighs in around the $115,000 mark. The Mercedes has a big 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 with 449 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. On paper, the two cars are pretty evenly matched. The Mercedes has more torque, but the BMW has more horsepower and a way better price. You could save about $47,000 by picking the BMW – money you could happily spend on upgrades instead of, you know… paying your bills.

If I were shopping for a luxury sports coupe, that would be my exact thought process. And I’m guessing the owner of this baby blue M2 is thinking the same. They chose some smart upgrades that turn this quiet, friendly M2 into the kind of girlfriend your mom definitely won’t approve of.

Alright, so picture this: you need a car big enough to fit half your soccer team, but you also want it to move like a sports car. What do you do? You could grab a Mazda Protege5, maybe an Audi SQ7, or if your wallet’s feeling extra confident, a Lamborghini Urus. All solid picks. But honestly? If you want something fast, fun, and still has enough room for your kids and their gear – the only real answer is the BMW X3M Competition.

Let’s talk numbers first, because they’re kinda ridiculous. The X3M Competition packs a 3.0-Liter Twin-turbo Inline-6 that pumps out 510 Horsepower and 479 ft-lbs of torque. 0-60? 3.8 Seconds. Yeah, that’s faster than most “real” sports cars; and this thing’s an SUV! It’s basically a family car that went to the gym, bulked up, and decided it’s done taking minivans seriously.

What’s better than a brand-new BMW M5 Hybrid?

Spending a ridiculous amount of money to make it even faster and louder, of course. BMW has always tried to mix speed, style, and luxury – and this new M5 might just be the perfect blend. Sure, BMW has had some plastic disasters in the past (looking at you, E36), but the 2025 G90 M5 is basically the final boss of sporty luxury sedans. When our customer dropped off his shiny new M5, he basically said, “I want to race it Saturday and drive grandma to church Sunday.” Challenge Accepted. Lets check out this SMS Tuned BMW M5

First, The Feel:

It’s a scenario that no one looks forward to. You’re driving your BMW down the road, enjoying a smooth and powerful ride, when suddenly your coolant light pops on. What should you do? Is it safe to keep driving? While this won’t be a popular answer, it’s the one that you need to hear.

No, it’s not safe to drive your BMW when the coolant light is on.

Warning lights are important, especially in a high-performance beast like your BMW. So, what might happen if you keep driving? Today we’re going to answer this question and also give you some signs of what to look for that might pop up on the off chance that the coolant light does now.

What Can Happen if I Keep Driving my BMW With the Coolant Light On?

While that coolant light looks calm, cool, and collected on your dashboard, don’t let the continued and quiet operation of your vehicle fool you – That light is on for a reason and you’d best pay attention. Even though your BMW is packed with a modern and efficient cooling system, the heat under the hood has a standard operating range of 195 to 220 degrees.

Note that we said ‘range’. Just starting off, your engine fires up and quickly hits 195 degrees, and by the time you’ve been driving for a few minutes then 220 is about the norm, or 230 if you’re having a little fun with it.

During that time, your coolant system is circulating fluid that is absorbing excess heat and then making a trip to the radiator, where that heat is dissipated and newly-cooled fluid makes the trip through your engine once again.

In normal circumstances, this is going to be quite efficient, but when you start leaking oil or coolant then the temperature begins to rise and so does the potential of damaging your BMW.

You might make it home, but then end up with damage from a superheated engine cooling down, or you might break down just a few minutes down the line. There’s even a small chance it will be okay – for now – but you really shouldn’t risk it.

If your coolant light is on, the best course of action is to pull your BMW over right away and get it towed to an expert.

Signs of Coolant Issues You Can Look For

When your coolant light is on or even a little before it makes an appearance, there are some symptoms that may show. Here are a few examples of what you can look for that indicate a coolant issue is at play:

  • Colorful puddles underneath your BMW – BMW coolant comes in different colors – orange, purple, red, and yellow – and if you see puddles of any of these then you’ve got a problem that needs to be addressed.
  • The heater is acting up – When coolant isn’t circulating properly, the heater in your BMW will often reflect this. You’ll turn it on and it might seem only a little warmer inside the car or perhaps not even that. Whether or not the coolant light is on, this warrants a checkup.
  • Higher operating temperatures – If your BMW’s temperature is constantly higher than 220 for prolonged periods of time, then take it as a warning and get your vehicle checked out. It should run between 195 and 220 degrees most of the time and 230 is okay when you’re punching it, but beyond these examples something is likely to be amiss.

GiroDisc Rotor + Brake Install | Track Spec F87 BMW M2 Competition

 

When you track the heck out of your SMSTuned M2 like Nick does you better have the equipment to stop all those ponies at once!
To give the ability to stop on a dime we sprung for GiroDisc’s full track application 400mm rotors and accommodating brake pads
What’s super neat about the Girodisc system is all you need to do is simply replace the cast iron rotor when needed. This particular application will bolt directly to the car and work with OE calipers perfectly. By upgrading your brakes with lightweight high performance replacements as opposed to a big brake kit, your factory bias is maintained as well as your ABS efficiency.
The central hat section of our rotor is made from strictly U.S. sourced 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminum.  The disc is made from proprietary cast iron, poured in the USA and machined from start to finish in house at Girodisc. The rotor utilizes a curved vane design, developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump to force cooling air through the disc.
The rotor and hat have a floating mount system, which utilizes 12 high strength alloy steel drive pins, manufactured by Girodisc in the USA to our own specifications and cadmium plated for a long lasting corrosion resistance. These pins take the load from braking actions while maintaining the axial and radial float between the hat and disc. The pins are secured by class 12.9 cap screws with hardened washers. In order to keep the rotors from making noise when cold, the pins are mounted with anti-noise spring washers on the rotor side which allow the rotor to grow with heat expansion but eliminate the rattle and noise associated with floating rotors. This float also allows the rotor to self center between the pads.
