(And How Solo Motorsports Helps Protect Your Vehicle)

These 5 simple mistakes shorten Engine life. European vehicles like BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen are engineered for performance and longevity. But their advanced design also means they require proper care, quality parts, and the right fluids.

At Solo Motorsports, we see many engine problems that are not caused by defects; but by avoidable mistakes. Over time, these issues can reduce performance, reliability, and engine life.

Below are five common mistakes European car owners make and how professional service helps prevent them.

Skipping or Delaying Oil Changes

European engines operate at higher temperatures and use tight internal tolerances. Clean, high-quality oil is essential for:

  • Engine lubrication

  • Heat control

  • Sludge prevention

  • Long-term engine protection

Delaying oil changes can lead to:

  • Premature engine wear

  • Oil sludge buildup

  • Expensive internal engine damage

At Solo Motorsports, we use Motul full-synthetic engine oils that meet or exceed factory specifications. Motul oils are designed to handle high heat, protect internal components, and maintain engine health; especially in European vehicles.

Using the correct oil and service interval is one of the most important ways to avoid shortened engine life.

Ignoring Warning Lights and Early Symptoms

Modern European vehicles are equipped with advanced monitoring systems that alert drivers when something is wrong.

Common warning signs include:

  • Check engine lights

  • Reduced power messages

  • Rough idle or misfires

  • Unusual engine noises

Ignoring these symptoms often turns small issues into major engine repairs. Early diagnosis helps prevent:

  • Engine damage

  • Poor fuel efficiency

  • Costly breakdowns

Solo Motorsports uses factory-level diagnostic equipment to accurately identify problems and fix them before they cause long-term damage.

Using Cheap or Non-Factory Replacement Parts

European engines are designed to work with precise factory-specified components. Using cheap or incorrect parts can cause:

  • Improper fitment

  • Poor engine performance

  • Warning lights

  • Shortened engine life

At Solo Motorsports, we prioritize factory replacement parts or OEM-equivalent components whenever possible. These parts are designed to meet manufacturer standards for:

  • Durability

  • Performance

  • Engine protection

Cutting corners on parts may save money upfront, but it often leads to higher repair costs later.

Modifying Without Proper Supporting Upgrades

European cars respond well to performance modifications, but problems happen when upgrades are done without supporting components.

Common mistakes include:

  • Tuning without improving cooling

  • Increasing power without strengthening supporting systems

  • Ignoring drivetrain and engine limits

At Solo Motorsports, we help customers plan modifications responsibly by recommending:

  • Proper cooling upgrades

  • Supporting hardware

  • Safe, balanced tuning strategies

This approach helps protect the engine while improving performance and drivability.

Skipping Preventive Maintenance Services

Waiting until something fails is one of the fastest ways to shorten engine life.

Preventive maintenance includes:

  • Regular inspections

  • Fluid services using correct specifications

  • Addressing leaks and wear early

  • Replacing aging components before failure

Solo Motorsports follows manufacturer-recommended service guidelines and uses Motul fluids for engine oil, transmission fluid, and other vital systems to help protect vehicles long term.

Preventive maintenance:

  • Extends engine life

  • Improves reliability

  • Reduces long-term ownership costs

Why Quality Parts and Fluids Matter

European engines depend on proper lubrication, cooling, and precise tolerances. Using factory replacement parts and premium fluids like Motul ensures:

  • Better engine protection

  • Consistent performance

  • Reduced wear

  • Longer engine life

This is why Solo Motorsports does not cut corners when servicing European vehicles.

Final Thoughts

Most European engine failures are not caused by bad engineering; but by poor maintenance decisions, low-quality parts, and delayed service.

Avoiding these five mistakes can help:

  • Extend engine life

  • Protect performance

  • Maintain reliability

  • Preserve long-term vehicle value

At Solo Motorsports, we specialize in maintaining and protecting European vehicles using factory replacement parts, Motul fluids, and proven service practices.

If you want your BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, or Volkswagen to last, quality service matters.

When you invest in a European vehicle be it a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, or Porsche, you aren’t just buying a mode of transportation. You are buying a masterpiece of precision engineering. These cars are designed with tighter tolerances, higher operating temperatures, and advanced emissions systems that set them apart from standard domestic models. We’ll explain why your European car needs Motul Fluids

Because these machines are so finely tuned, the “blood” running through them, the engine oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid must meet exacting standards. While it might be tempting to save $30 at your next oil change by opting for a generic “full synthetic” brand, that choice could cost you thousands of dollars in repairs down the road.

Here is why quality fluids like Motul are essential for your European ride, and the risks of taking the “cheap” route.

1. The European Difference: Heat and Tolerances

European engines are often smaller but more powerful than their American counterparts, frequently utilizing turbochargers to deliver high performance. This creates an environment of extreme heat and pressure.

  • Tighter Clearances: Parts in a European engine move with incredible precision. High-quality oils like Motul 8100 or 300 LS series are formulated to maintain a consistent lubricating film even at high temperatures, ensuring metal-to-metal contact never occurs.
  • Turbocharger Protection: Turbos can spin at over 200,000 RPM. Cheap oil can “cook” (oxidize) inside the turbo’s bearings when you shut the engine off, leading to carbon deposits that eventually starve the turbo of oil and cause total failure.

2. Protecting Sensitive Emissions Systems

Modern European cars use sophisticated after-treatment systems, such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) and Three-Way Catalytic Converters.

Generic oils often contain high levels of SAPS (Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus, and Sulfur). While these additives protect older engines, they are “poison” to modern European exhaust systems. Motul’s specialized low-SAPS formulas ensure your emissions components remain clean, preventing the dreaded “limp mode” and avoiding $3,000+ replacement costs for a clogged DPF.

3. The Hidden Cost of “Cheap” Fluids

Using substandard fluids is a classic example of “penny wise, pound foolish.” Here is what often happens when you use generic or non-approved fluids:

Issue Cause Long-Term Consequence
Sludge Build-up Cheap oil breaks down faster under heat. Clogged oil passages and engine seizure.
Timing Chain Wear Lack of specific anti-wear additives. “Stretched” chains leading to catastrophic engine timing failure.
Seal Degradation Incompatible chemical bases in cheap fluids. Persistent oil leaks from gaskets and O-rings.
Transmission Shudder Generic ATF lacking correct friction modifiers. Rough shifting and eventually a total gearbox rebuild.

4. Why Motul?

Motul has been a pioneer in synthetic technology since 1971, when they launched the first 100% synthetic oil (300V) using Ester technology. Unlike many “full synthetic” oils that are actually highly processed mineral oils (Group III), Motul utilizes high-end Group IV and V base stocks.

Expert Tip: Motul doesn’t just “fit” European cars; they carry official OEM Approvals. When you see “BMW LL-01” or “Mercedes-Benz 229.5” on a bottle of Motul, it means the car manufacturer has tested and verified that specific fluid for your engine.

5. Solo Motorsports: Your Local Motul Experts

You don’t have to guess which fluid is right for your car. As an Authorized Motul Retailer, Solo Motorsports carries the exact oils, brake fluids, and coolants your car needs. Our team knows European cars inside and out, and we use Motul to ensure your vehicle runs perfectly for years to come.

Conclusion: Respect the Engineering

Your European vehicle was engineered to provide a specific driving experience, but that performance relies entirely on the quality of its maintenance. By choosing a premium brand like Motul, you aren’t just performing an oil change; you are insuring your engine against premature wear and expensive failures.

Don’t settle for “good enough” when your car was built for “the best.”

German engineered vehicles like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, are celebrated worldwide for their precision, performance, and luxury. But every owner knows that maintaining this level of engineering excellence can come with a premium price tag. Understanding the typical costs and knowing where to get the best value for your maintenance and repairs is key to enjoying your German auto ownership experience. That’s why you should only trust a true German Auto Repair Specialist.

The Reality of German Car Maintenance Costs

It’s a common consensus: German luxury cars often have higher maintenance and repair costs than many domestic or Asian-made vehicles. This is generally due to a few key factors:

  • Complex Engineering: German vehicles are packed with advanced technology and sophisticated systems. This complexity means that diagnoses and repairs require specialized training and tools, driving up labor costs.
  • Parts Cost: Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts for German makes are typically more expensive. While quality aftermarket options exist, the preference for high-quality, specialized components often increases the overall bill.
  • Labor Rates: Dealerships and even specialized independent shops invest heavily in manufacturer-specific tools and training, which is reflected in their labor rates. In some regions, labor costs for specialty European auto repair can be quite high.

However, the good news is that by choosing the right service provider and sticking to a proactive maintenance schedule, you can significantly mitigate these costs. This is where an independent specialist like Solo Motorsports comes into play.

🏆 Solo Motorsports vs. The Dealership: The Clear Advantages

When it’s time for routine service or a major repair, many German auto owners default to the dealership. But a specialist shop like Solo Motorsports offers compelling advantages that often result in better service and greater value.

1. Cost Savings & Pricing Transparency

The most immediate benefit is the cost advantage. Dealerships have massive overhead, large facilities, extensive administrative staff, and corporate mandates; all of which contribute to higher labor rates.

  • Lower Labor Rates: Independent shops typically have lower operational costs, allowing them to charge significantly less for labor than a dealership.
  • Part Flexibility: While Solo Motorsports is committed to using high-quality parts, they can often provide you with options; including high-quality aftermarket parts that meet or exceed OEM standards, giving you control over your budget. Dealerships are often restricted to using only OEM parts, which are pricier.

2. Specialized Expertise & Focus

Don’t let the dealership tell you they’re the only ones with the know-how. The best independent German auto specialists are often founded and staffed by ASE-certified and factory-trained technicians; many of whom have left the dealership environment.

  • Dedicated Focus: Shops like Solo Motorsports focus exclusively on a few select German makes (BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, etc.). This deep specialization means their technicians are constantly working on the same platforms, making them masters of specific vehicle idiosyncrasies and common issues.
  • Access to Tools: Reputable independent shops invest in the same diagnostic equipment and specialized tools as the dealership to handle modern, computer-driven German vehicles.

3. Personalized Service & Relationship Building

At a high-volume dealership, you’re often just a ticket number. You speak to a service advisor who then communicates with a mechanic you never meet.

  • Direct Communication: At an independent shop, you often get to speak directly with the technician or the owner who is personally overseeing the work. This fosters a relationship of trust and allows for clearer, more honest communication about your car’s needs.
  • Focus on Long-Term Care: Independent specialists rely on local reputation and customer loyalty. Their goal is to keep your car running reliably for years, not just push the most expensive service package. They are often more flexible and willing to work with your budget and priorities to find the best long-term solution.

4. Quicker Turnaround Times

Dealership service bays are often backlogged with high volumes of warranty work and routine maintenance.

  • Streamlined Process: Independent shops typically operate with less bureaucracy and are more agile. They can often get your car scheduled and repaired faster, minimizing your downtime.

The Verdict: The Smart Choice is Clear

While the complex engineering of a German luxury car demands expert attention, that expertise doesn’t have to come with a prohibitive price tag or an impersonal service experience.

Choosing an independent specialist like Solo Motorsports offers the perfect balance: factory-level knowledge and equipment combined with competitive pricing and truly personalized customer care. It’s the smarter, more economical, and often more satisfying choice for keeping your German machine running at its peak performance.

Ready to experience the independent specialist difference?

Modifying a car is an emotional rollercoaster.

One minute you’re hyped about adding more power, and the next minute you’re wondering why your bank account is giving you the silent treatment. But once everything comes together, there’s nothing like the moment your car finally wakes up and says, “Let’s go!” But it can’t wake up with out Tuning those Performance Upgrades.

Take this Mercedes CLS550, for example. From the factory, it’s a luxurious, well-mannered cruiser pushing 402 horsepower. Sounds strong—until you remember it weighs over 4,000 pounds. That’s like asking a bodybuilder to sprint while giving his twin a piggyback ride. Power alone doesn’t tell the story; power-to-weight ratio does. This is why enthusiasts start chasing upgrades: bigger turbos, free-flowing intakes, high-volume fuel systems, exhaust systems that actually breathe, and sometimes even full engine builds with forged internals. (If you go that route, may your wallet rest in peace.)

The Starting Setup

For this CLS550, we kicked things off with a solid foundation of performance upgrades:

  • Black Boost Gen 2 Intakes
  • Black Boost Wide-Open Thermostat Bypass
  • Turbo-back valved exhaust kit
  • SMS ECU Stage 2+ Tune
  • SMS TCU Stage 2 Tune
  • Ghost Motorsports Ghost Link Coilovers

All great upgrades… but here’s the truth:

None of it works the way it should without proper tuning.

You can bolt the biggest turbo in the world onto a car, but without tuning, it’ll run like it’s doing a marathon while chain-smoking. Upgrade your fuel system without ECU calibration, and the engine will breathe like it has seasonal allergies. It won’t be fun, it won’t be fast—just confused.

The Role of Tuning: The Brain Behind the Build

This is where tuning performance upgrades becomes the hero of the story.

Anyone can install performance parts, but making all those parts work together seamlessly? That takes skill. At Solo Motorsports, tuning isn’t just a service—it’s a science and an art. You need someone who’s part engineer, part software developer, and just a tiny bit wizard.

So how does tuning actually work?

A tuner connects specialized software to the vehicle’s ECU (Engine Control Unit)—and often the TCU (Transmission Control Unit)—to monitor and adjust how the car behaves.

This is typically done on a dynamometer, AKA:

  • A dyno
  • A rolling road
  • That giant machine that makes your car look like it’s doing cardio

Some DIY tuners attempt this on public roads, which is… let’s just say “memorable.”

What the tuner looks for:

  • Air-fuel ratio (AFR)
  • Boost levels and turbo efficiency
  • Ignition timing
  • Engine load and knock detection
  • Intake air temps & coolant temps
  • Transmission shift timing and torque limits

These measurements show how the engine responds under different conditions. From there, the tuner adjusts the software so the engine makes more power safely, without knocking, overheating, or being pushed beyond its mechanical limits.

When tuning the transmission, shift points are recalibrated for:

  • Faster shifts
  • Higher torque capacity
  • Better power delivery
  • Less hesitation
  • Stronger, smoother acceleration

Basically, the car stops feeling like it just woke up from a nap and starts feeling like it’s had three shots of espresso.

Why It Matters

Tuning is the difference between:

  • A car running a marathon with pneumonia, or
  • A car running it with a jetpack strapped to its back

The hardware gives you the potential.

Tuning unleashes it.

When everything works together—fuel, air, timing, boost, and transmission logic—you get a car that’s not just faster, but smoother, more responsive, and far more reliable under power.

And that’s why tuning isn’t optional. It’s essential.

The classic charm of driving an old Mercedes model is something that vehicle enthusiasts will never forget. Especially, the Mercedes produced between the late 1970s and the 1990s are still a rage with many millennials. However, the excitement of driving these Mercedes models can be short-lived if you start experiencing vacuum door lock failure.

Mercedes models produced during this time period are especially prone to vacuum door lock issues, which makes it a challenge to drive these luxury cars. In this article, we will discuss the problem of vacuum door lock failure in your Mercedes in detail.

Reasons Behind Vacuum Door Lock Failure

Vacuum Line Leaks

Often, the leading reason behind vacuum door lock failure in Mercedes is related to the presence of leaks in the vacuum lines. The vacuum lines are made up of rubber & plastic connectors, and over the years, they can develop cracks leading to vacuum leaks, which affect the functioning of the doors in your Mercedes.

Now, due to the leaking vacuum line, you will find that some of your doors are inoperative; however, in rare instances, Mercedes owners have complained that all the doors malfunction simultaneously. During the initial stages of the problem, you will witness that the door will function intermittently.

Nevertheless, as the problem progresses without rectification, you will begin to hear unusual noises in the form of hissing sounds, and the door will become completely inoperative. The moment you notice any of these symptoms in your Mercedes, contact us at our auto repair shop to have your vacuum doors inspected for leaks.

Malfunctioning Vacuum Pump

For the efficient functioning of the doors, Mercedes comes equipped with a vacuum pump that is either electrically or mechanically operated. Now, if the vacuum pump malfunctions, you will face issues with the opening and closing of your vacuum doors.

The majority of the time, the vacuum pump fails due to internal leaks, faulty motors, and worn brushes. Due to the failure of the vacuum pump, you will find that your locks will fail to respond completely, and there won’t be any noise coming from the pump when you attempt to lock or unlock your doors.

At times, Mercedes drivers even complain about the complete failure of the central locking system in their cars. Often, it is observed that the electric motor responsible for operating the pump burns out due to continuous operation, and replacing the motor makes the vacuum pump operational again.

Additionally, many professionals recommend testing the pump for power generation using a multimeter. In many cases, the complete replacement of the vacuum pump assembly is also carried out to make the vacuum pump operational in Mercedes.

Failing Vacuum Reservoir

The vacuum reservoir is responsible for storing vacuum pressure, allowing you to lock and unlock the doors even when the engine is off. Over the years, as your luxury car accumulates miles, the vacuum reservoir begins to loosen and often develops cracks, leading to issues with the operation of your Mercedes’ doors.

Due to the failing vacuum reservoir, you will observe a peculiar situation where the locks work perfectly fine when the engine is operating, but the moment the engine is turned off, you will fail to lock or unlock your doors. That is, the operation of the vacuum doors will completely depend on the engine running of your car.

Bad Door Lock Switch

Another factor that might lead to the failure of the vacuum doors in your Mercedes is the door lock switch, which controls the opening and closing of the vacuum doors. The majority of the time, due to internal faults, the vacuum door lock switches malfunction, and this leaves you with inoperative doors.

Dealing with bad door lock switches is considered easy in comparison to the other problems you might encounter with the functioning of the vacuum door lock in your Mercedes. The efficiency of the switches can be tested using a multimeter, and replacing the failing switch module will make your doors functional again.

Mercedes-Benz has long been known for its smooth handling, both in how it glides across the road and in its responsiveness to the slightest touch on the steering wheel. So, what might cause a Mercedes steering wheel to start feeling loose and more importantly, what can you do about it?

Today we’ll talk a little about Mercedes-Benz steering so that if this is occurring in your vehicle, you’ll have a pretty good idea of the cause and the next steps involved in putting this problem behind you.

What Can Cause My Steering Wheel to Feel Loose?

Mercedes steering might feel like a dream, but it’s actually reliant on quite a few components that come together to make the magic happen. That doesn’t mean that you can’t isolate where the problem is, however, so here are the most common issues that may produce a loose-feeling steering wheel:

  • Steering rack problems – Sometimes the rack and pinion mechanism for your steering can become degraded, either from prolonged fluid contact or normal wear and tear. When this happens, drifting may occur when you are steering the vehicle and this definitely creates a safety issue that you won’t want to wait to address.
  • Damaged or degraded steering column – Likewise the steering column may be the cause of ‘loose steering’. If it’s recently been replaced, this could be a poor-quality installation, although most often these types of issues have to do with joints wearing down over time.
  • Steering gear issues – Your steering gear is there to transfer the motion from your steering wheel to the wheels of your vehicle and if you have power steering, it will be working directly with the steering gear to help upgrade your handling. When there are problems, control is affected and that can cause the steering wheel to feel loose and less responsive.
  • Wear and tear on the ball joints – Ball joints help to connect the control arms and your steering knuckle, and like any other parts these can become worn and require eventual replacement.
  • Loose tie rod ends – The tie rods ends are what connect your steering system to your wheels. With time and pressure, they start wearing down and when they do, you’ll feel it in the wheel as less-responsive control becomes apparent in your Mercedes.

How do I Find Out What the Problem is?

Narrowing down the issue is not something you want to try to do if you’re a novice. That said, if you have a mechanical inclination, there are certainly some things that you can check. For instance, if the car is on a jack and suspended safely, you can try moving the wheels to see if you get a lot of movement.

If you do, then the ball joints might be going out on the wheel that’s moving a little too easily. Likewise, if you know where to find the tie rods you can give them a good look to see if you can spot wear and tear, and check for loose connections or leaks in your steering gear.

If your Mercedes Benz has power steering, then an easy thing you can check is the fluid levels, but as you can see most of the items that you’d need to look at are going to take a little more mechanical skill than most folks are going to have.

The bright side, however, is that regular routine maintenance can usually catch these issues before they can become a problem, provided that your mechanic knows their way around a Mercedes.

A Little Routine Maintenance Goes a Long Way

Regular preventative maintenance protects your Mercedes Power Steering Fluid Check investment by making sure that you are always getting the manufacturer recommended checks at exactly the right time. If you happen to live in Georgia, then we’ve got good news – Solo Motorsports is ready to help!

Mercedes models are known for their sophistication in style, design, and features. This reputation is only possible due to the many complex components that work together to ensure that your Mercedes is in top condition. Some of these components are commonly ignored until they run into problems. The thermostat that controls your engine’s temperature is one example.

Your car needs an engine thermostat for adequate temperature regulation and this is achieved by controlling coolant flow to various engine components when the engine gets too hot. Thermostat problems can lead to even more complicated problems, which is why you should know what to do as soon as you realize a fault.

Below are signs of thermostat problems in your Mercedes:

  • Erratic temperature gauge movement
  • Inconsistent temperature gauge readings
  • Overheating engine
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Low coolant levels.
  • Car heater problems

Common Causes of Thermostat Failures in a Mercedes

The thermostat in your Mercedes works by opening or closing its valves (depending on the temperature of the engine) to control coolant flow. If the engine’s temperature gets too high, the coolant then absorbs the heat to cool down the temperature.

Despite the thermometer’s important function, it can still run into problems due to some reasons. Some of the common reasons for thermometer failures are:

  • Natural Wear: Wear and damage due to natural cause is one of the most common reasons why your Mercedes thermometer could fail. As you use your car, you may begin to notice certain issues because some parts have started to wear out from consistent use. While this is almost inevitable, you can extend the timespan by following a strict maintenance routine.
  • Contaminants in Coolant: Another reason why your car’s thermostat could fail is the presence of contaminants in the coolant. If the coolant is contaminated by dirt, debris, or metal shavings, it can cause residue to build up around the thermostat, leading to complications and eventually, a thermostat failure. This is why it is important to regularly check and change the coolant fluid.

How to Deal with Thermostat Problems in Your Mercedes

If your Mercedes has a faulty thermostat, here are 4 ways you can deal with the problem.

  • Start with the Diagnosis: Before you decide on what is truly wrong and how to fix your car’s thermometer, you should first conduct a diagnostic test to figure out the issue with the system. This is important because the signs you are seeing could also be the result of other problems. A diagnostic test using a scan tool will pinpoint the exact cause of the problem.
  • Coolant System Flush: One solution that could also help improve the function and performance of your car’s thermometer is a coolant system flush. This is effective if you notice that the coolant has contaminants that could be impeding the functions of the thermometer. This system flush helps to remove debris or dirt.
  • Thermostat Replacement: If you notice signs of thermostat failures in your car, the best solution is to replace the thermostat as a majority of thermostat problems cannot be fixed. FAST GROCERIES

We love absolutely absurd cars, and the GLE63s is one of the most asinine, yet impressive Super SUVs that takes the cake. You get 610 HP from AMG’s now-ubiquitous 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine that produces 18.9 pounds of boost, enough to move this big slab (the regular GLE 450 weighs about 4,991 pounds) to 60 mph in a sports car-like 3.4 seconds 🔥
You also get Mercedes’ new EQ Boost hybrid tech which is a combined starter motor, alternator and electric motor integrated between the engine and the transmission. In addition to powering the 48-volt system, it adds an additional 21 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque for extra passing power when you need to overtake that Karen that drives below the speed limit in the left lane. For the first time ever here, Benz made EQ Boost responsible for idle speed control, allowing for extra fuel savings – our client reports she gets around 20-22 mpg so far!
This AMG swung by our Lawrenceville shop to swap out factory oil to @Motul 8100 series + upgrade to a set of @bmcairfilters Sport Air Filters
We love our AMG clients right! From basic maintenance, major service intervals all the way up to custom performance SMSTunes, CPC and TCU Tuning, Solo offers a plethora of options to preserve + unleash the most out of your AMG! Speak to a Solo-Certified Advisor to learn more.

G WAGON 4×4

Nothing quote embodies Boujee quite like a Mercedes G-Class, especially out here in Atlanta, where the players play. They’re everywhere, in bright and matte colors; the AMGs outnumber the standard G550s, and I’ve even seen a few Brabus-tuned ones in the past few months. But no G-Class sold in the U.S. up until this point can match the badassery of Our client Ash’s SMS-FAB / SMSTuned G550 4×4² – that’s “4×4 Squared.” It is the ultimate embodiment of everything exuberant. Say what you will about the candy coated paint job, its $25k. You’re wrong, it’s cool, and we absolutely love it.

We had a blast Tuning, modifying & creating custom built downpipes for this Benz! After having it for a few days we can say that this thing is just straight up NICE. You ask how nice the G550 is? Hella nice. I can tell you that this 4x4² bro-dozer is pretty much unstoppable – portal axles, an extra eight inches of ground clearance, and dual springs and struts at each wheel certainly does the trick. It’ll drive up steep, rocky hills. It’ll ford deep waters. It'll get over the speed bumps at Lenox Mall. And that’s before you put it in low range and lock the differentials I can say this is one Mercedes that would just love to get dirty. The Interior: It’s true, you get diamond-stitched Designo seats with Alcantara accents. There’s leather everywhere. Indeed, it’s a Mercedes-Benz. But it’s also $225,000, making it the most expensive of all G-Class variants, and in fact, the most expensive Mercedes vehicle behind the AMG S65 Coupe and Cabriolet. Of course, it’s already discontinued, so I guess that’s a moot point. To the owners we will see ya'll around Atlanta.

“Goes where it wants to go, it’s true an untamed animal.”

JUST LOOK AT IT. It’s HUGE. At more than 7 feet wide you wonder how it fit onto our Dyno. It Kinda fit. But really, who cares?

The G Squared goes where it wants to go. the Mercedes Benz G500 4×4 Squared is one of the most awesome and preposterous vehicle most of the staff here at Solo Motorsports ever laid eyes on (we’ve seen AMG’s G63 6×6 up close and it’s quite boisterous in nature!).

The 4×4 Squared is indeed very closely related to AMG’s wicked pickup, and this particular example was dipped in a vat of retina-searing fluorescent paint (fyi the paint is named High Gloss Electric Beam). This GSquared  also belongs to an infamous ATLien.

Mentionable FEATURES

TOTALLY UNIQUE SUSPENSION

The G500 4×4 Squared has eight dampers and eight springs. Here’s one key way the 4×4 Squared differs from not only the 6×6 but also all other G-wagens: Mercedes claims they learned this trick from “rally sport.” Sure, why not? All eight dampers are gas bypass struts.

INSANE ENGINE

Four liters, two turbos, eight pistons, 416hp, and 450 ft of tq. Modest, nope.

PORTAL AXLES

For those who don’t know, a portal axle is an axle where instead of the two shafts going into the center of the wheel, they actually feed into the top of the wheel and are then geared to the hub.

Mercedes-Benz Weistec E63 AMG

The Black Beast as we like to call it checked in for custom exhaust work and checkup. The customer reported that the car wasn’t performing at its best. He also said that he felt power loss throughout the gear range. We immediately checked for the most common problems: turbocharged engine face, a boost leak! As anticipated, we encountered numerous small boost leaks as well as vacuum leaks. We strapped the Mercedes E63 AMG to the dyno before and after repair to calculate power loss the leaks were causing. We also customized the exhaust by installing Electronic Cutouts to improve the overall performance.

What is a Boost Leak?
Having a boost leak means that somewhere in the turbo or intake, there is an area where the air (boost) is escaping. Typically, a boost leak is caused by a loose or bad seal, cracked housing, and bad or old hoses, clamps. In the event of a boost leak, the turbo will be able to generate boost, but it will not be able to hold it at a constant level. Pressure drop-offs proportionally to the size of the leak.

What is a Vacuum Leak?
A vacuum leak affects the performance of the engine and may cause a rough and idle hesitation on acceleration, misfiring, and poor fuel economy. A vacuum leak is caused by a loose or bad seal, cracked housing, and inadequate or old hoses, clamps.

If you are facing similar or related issues, call Solo Motorsports today to schedule an appointment for your Automotive needs.

Here at Solo Motorsports we intend on spreading the knowledge to our customers & fan base about what goes on with their cars, how things work and genuine opinions, reviews and testimonies of products in our new blog segment #schooledbysolo

When you have a performance car, a daily driver or a weekend midnight race sleeper, your stock brake system might just don’t always cut it. If you’re driving aggressively (and, let’s be honest, why wouldn’t you be, we know you’re flying down 85 goin 110, we aint snitchin’), you need something that will handle the serious power and speed your car (and foot) produces. Performance brake upgrades like a new set of pads – or even a big brake kit – will fit that bill.

Think. Step on the brakes. Is the ABS system kicking on because the wheels are locking up? Congratulations, your car simply can’t stop any faster.

Big brakes and drilled rotors WILL help with heat dissipation, and you don’t just need to worry about that on the race track, this applies to daily driving habits swell. And if you’re actually tracking your car enough to warrant different brakes, then you know enough to ignore this advice.

We’ve heard all sorts of reasons the dealership suggests not to “upgrade” brakes, especially on performance cars. “They are tested and balanced for the car, by actual engineers and upgrading WON’T HELP ”

Recently we had the pleasure of installing a kit that saved our customer a substantial amount of Benjamins!

Mercedes-Benz wanted to charge me an arm and a leg for brakes!”

Hearing that come out of one of our client’s mouth absolutely floored us.

That price is absolutely asinine and ridiculous. Mercedes must be out of their mind demanding a price for just replacing the stock front brakes.

We had to seek a quick and reasonable solution to this dilemma. This dude needed new front brakes FAST.Insisted on OEM parts ONLY. The Team sat there spitballing ideas back & fourth.

Then there was an epiphany. Light went off and BOOM. Why not a Big Brake Kit? There was a new Big Brake Kit in the back- consisting out of genuine OEM 2 piece 390mm Rotors that could fit this Merc . Eureka! Genius. Good Job.

To make these rotors fit the boys at Solo had to custom make some nifty new brackets. Forged from high strength Billet 6061 aluminum, featured below.

Billet Bracket

Custom Bracket, doin’ its thing; the bracket pushes the caliper out to accommodate the thicker rotors.

Right – 2pc 390mm 2pc (OEM upgraded Brembos)

#SchooledbySolo- Stopping on a Dime with Big Brakes. #SchooledbySolo- Stopping on a Dime with Big Brakes.

Most cars from factory are designed to be Front Skid Limited, that is, the front brakes will lock up before the rears. The reason being if you lock the front brakes, the car will continue to go in whatever direction the wheel is pointing(dun). This allows for much safer driving compared to the alternative, which is called Rear Skid Limited.

When a car is Rear Skid Limited, it means the rears will lock up before the fronts. When this happens, the car will try to spin out. Since during braking the weight transfers to the front of the car, there is less weight in the rear which causes it to try to rotate around. In some cases, you can spin around completely, which is why your front brakes have more braking force than the rear.

For the TL:DR crowd: More braking surface also gives more control, more rotational mass (Newton’s second law) means safer breaking distances.

We have just TWO sets of these particular brakes left for sale out of the 40 we originally ordered. Don’t have a Benz? Don’t worry! Give us a call and we can discuss how we can fabricate a set just for you in the time window you need it!
